Projects

Some of our past projects

RFID Tag and Environment Modeling
This project involved analyzing the unusual environment of an RFID tag inside a printer. RFID tags are usually designed to work in a farfield environment; the tag being inside a printer is definitely not such a situation. This effort provided results to enhance designs for the antenna and RFID path through the printer, greatly improving the design by increasing antenna – target tag communications and reducing antenna – secondary tag coupling. Among other tasks this effort included importing complicated geometries from mechanical CAD software, cleaning up the part objects and doing a parametric study of various geometric designs and locations of the DUTs.

Power Divider Product Buyout Technical Consultation
For this project, a company was interested in purchasing a power divider product line. We provided technical expertise on many topics for the possible buyout including: evaluating the existing design, discussing possible variations of the existing design and likely product placement in the industry.

GPS Array and Element Design
Several antenna arrays of patches were analyzed and designed to meet design specs for a GPS application.

Consulted on Optimization / Testing algorithm techniques for ASIC and FPGA Verification
Several optimization techniques were discussed for doing verification of ASIC and FPGA designs. Some of the topics discussed included: Genetic Algorithms, Bee-Hive Algorithms and other more basic approaches.

Frequency Selective Surface Utilizing a Diode
For this project, we utilized software to model a frequency selective surface that included a non-linear device. This was accomplished using several different approaches including modeling a Waveguide Simulator and an Analytic Simulator for the DUT.

Photonic Band Gap (PBG) Devices
Since PBGs are often periodic devices they are readily modeled using a Waveguide Simulator and/or an Analytic Simulator. For a non-expert, these types of models can be the most challenging type of device to setup in Ansoft’s HFSS.

Phased Array and Antenna Element Design along with RCS Analysis
Here, a cone frustum array of elements was analyzed. This effort included array analysis (beam width, scan capability, grating lobe) and element design (multilayered patch with parasitic) analysis along with material selection. We were also involved in the measurement effort at outdoor and anechoic chambers. Further, the RCS of the array had a specification for which the design was analyzed by utilizing RCS modeling software.

Consultation on selection and detailed setup of computer modeling workstations
We provided detailed consultation on selection of hardware, software and OS for modeling efforts. In many cases, memory settings, swap, disk types and partitioning can be tweaked to improve performance for computational efforts.

Various software development efforts:

  • Awk script to sort and format data from antenna range measurements
  • Gnuplot along with Awk script to plot the data on a Smith Chart (from Nec, for example)
  • Conformal array pattern calculation (in MapleV, FORTRAN and Python)
  • Excel spread sheet for waveguide mode calculation and waveguide simulator mode to scan angle correspondence
  • Grating lobe visualization utility – shows beam width and scanned beam location along with grating lobes

Data sorting, formatting and visualization from

  • BSC
  • RCS
  • Nec4
  • Ansoft HFSS

Various scripts for Ansoft HFSS (v8, final development on v9+ in progress)

  • Unit cell creation for array solution
  • FSS transmission and reflection calculation
  • Optimized PML generation (Rectangular, Cylindrical and Spherical)
